Codename 2182: we are building the software for studying the GMDSS
A collaboration with Universo GMDSS Italia, the maritime radio school that takes 99% of its students through the ministerial exam. Faithful equipment simulation, distress procedures step by step, real preparation. The software is in the works.

Where this story starts
There is a world where software cannot afford to be sloppy: maritime radio communications. The GMDSS, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, is what allows a vessel in trouble to be found. Anyone who goes to sea professionally, or seriously, meets it in the form of a demanding ministerial exam, taken on real equipment: VHF with digital selective calling, MF/HF, INMARSAT, EPIRBs.
Preparing for that exam today means studying theory, grinding through question banks and, if the school is a good one, getting your hands on simulators. And that is exactly the point where this story starts to concern us.
Why a software house
BlackOrder builds vertical, native Mac software for people who actually work with their tools: live production, network analysis, audio, terminals. When Universo GMDSS Italia told us how they prepare their students, entirely online, on simulators identical to the ministerial ones, with a 99% pass rate and hundreds of mariners trained, the question asked itself: what happens if that teaching experience becomes native software, designed from scratch by people who do this for a living?
That is how this collaboration was born. The school brings the doctrine, the procedures and years of exam rooms; we bring the craft of turning all of that into an instrument you can practise on until the real radio feels familiar.
Codename 2182
The project has a codename: 2182, after 2182 kHz, the international medium frequency distress and calling channel, the one every coast station kept watch on for decades. It felt like the right name for software whose job is teaching people to call, and to answer.
Together with Universo GMDSS Italia we are building a native study companion for the GMDSS certifications: faithful simulation of the on-board equipment, distress and safety procedures walked through step by step, and exam preparation without surprises, shaped on the same question banks and workflows the school uses every day. It is the kind of project BlackOrder exists for: well-made vertical software for people whose work depends on it. The software does not exist yet: it is in the works, and there is nothing to download today. We will talk about it here again when there is something to put in your hands.
In the meantime, if the sea is your trade or you want it to become one: the GOC, ROC, LRC and SRC certifications are prepared with Universo GMDSS Italia, entirely online, with personalised teaching and a secretariat that handles the ministerial paperwork. The right place to start is gmdssitalia.it.
